Title: "Statistical Advances in Time-Frequency Analysis for Digital Health: Tackling Signal Quality Challenges"

Abstract: The advancement of wearable devices and innovative technologies has provided physicians and researchers with extensive access to multimodal physiological waveforms, offering valuable diagnostic insights for healthcare and research. However, defining and ensuring signal quality remains a significant challenge, particularly when aiming to extract reliable and actionable clinical information grounded in a strong scientific foundation. This talk will explore recent progress in nonstationary time series analysis, highlighting advanced time-frequency analysis techniques as critical tools for extracting meaningful insights from such datasets, alongside recent advancements in their statistical inference. Additionally, I will revisit the concept of signal quality in digital health and demonstrate these methodologies with clinical examples.

Short bio: Hau-Tieng Wu is currently a full professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University. Previously he was a full professor in mathematics and statistics at Duke University.  He received the M.D. degree from the National Yang Ming University, Taiwan, in 2003, and the Ph.D. degree in mathematics from Princeton University in 2011 under the guidance of Prof. Ingrid Daubechies. He worked on high-dimensional data analysis with Princeton University with Prof. Amit Singer. He had a resident training with Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan, before moving to mathematics. His recent interest focuses on the mathematical and statistical foundation of machine learning tools aiming for analyzing multimodal physiological waveform signals and providing solutions to medical challenges. He was awarded the 2015 Sloan Research Fellowship and the 2017 Early Career Award in Applied Mathematics from CAIMS/PIMS.
