The Statistics Department employs undergraduate students as Academic Peer Advisors for the Statistics and Data Science programs on an annual basis.
Primary Function and Tasks:
Peer Advisors in the Department of Statistics play a vital role in supporting current and prospective students in the Statistics and Data Science major and minor programs. Under the supervision of the Statistics Department Staff Advisor, peer advisors provide academic advising for undergraduate students regarding course selection, major/minor requirements, general academic planning, department resources and policies, and extracurricular opportunities. Peer advisors are also expected to:
- assist in planning and marketing department events and programs (such as Fall Welcome, Decision Day, Alumni Career Nights, etc.),
- host workshops and info sessions for current students,
- provide general information about college and university requirements,
- refer students to other on-campus academic and student services as needed,
- offer encouragement and provide a welcoming and non-judgmental environment for students to express their concerns,
- help with departmental administrative tasks as needed, and if available participate in virtual Orientation Workshops and Info Sessions during Summer.
Qualifications:
To be considered for this position applicants must be a statistics or data science major with a minimum 2.5 (3.0 and above preferred) GPA. They must also have strong communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- previous advising or related experiences
- familiarity with campus resources
- public speaking skills
- experience in program planning and marketing
- skills in design and publishing software
Training:
Peer advisors are required to participate in virtual training the Spring/Summer Quarter before they officially begin the position the following Fall Quarter. The training will consist of online modules and other virtual trainings/job shadowing. We expect the training to be 1-2 hours per week maximum and you will be paid your regular hourly wage and/or a stipend.You will also need to participate in a background check.
Pay/Hours:
Peer Advisors work 10-13 hours per week in the Statistics Department Advising Office during the academic year (Fall through Spring Quarter). This is an in-person position. You will be paid at the current pay rate for Student Assistant 3 positions.
