Statistics Graduate Program

Welcome to the Graduate Program in Statistics!

Group shot

The Graduate Program in Statistics (GPS) consists of twenty-nine faculty including members affiliated with various departments on campus. (Check out our faculty genealogy project!) Our graduate programs are based on the premise that good applications are built on strong foundations in theory and methods. Thus, the core program for every graduate student in statistics includes graduate level core courses in mathematical statistics, applied statistics and multivariate analysis. Students obtain training in computational statistics and can choose from a variety of special topics courses.

Ph.D. in Statistics

Build a theoretical and applied research foundation, including modern data science and machine learning. The Ph.D. degree includes a thorough background of coursework in contemporary statistical theory, and provides an opportunity for studying a field in which statistics is applied. The Biostatistics Track subspecialty builds on a strong and diversified statistics program, and utilizes an environment of highly regarded campus programs in agricultural and environmental sciences, biological sciences, medicine, and veterinary medicine.

M.S. in Statistics

Enhance your career and acquire theoretical and applied knowledge in data science and statistics! The Master's of Science in Statistics is based on a mixture of theoretical and applied coursework, a comprehensive exam, and a statistical consulting requirement. Students can choose between the Standard Track and the Data Science Track.

Admissions

You can apply for our programs online via UC Davis Graduate Studies. We only accept full-time students, entering in the Fall quarter. The deadline to apply for admission for the P.h.D program is December 1st, and the deadline for M.S. applications is January 15th.

Graduate Group in Biostatistics

In addition to the Graduate Program in Statistics, the department also houses the Graduate Group in Biostatistics (GGB). You can find out more about the graduate programs they offer and how to apply for them by visiting the GGB website.

Financial Support

Funding is available to Ph.D. students in the form of employment as a Teaching Assistant, Associate Instructor or Graduate Student Researcher. Additionally, Graduate Studies administers several fellowships that are open for new students to apply for. While we are unable to offer financial support to M.S. students, all students may apply for fellowships and student employment positions. We employ M.S. students in the Department of Statistics as possible and advertise available student positions in the Department of Statistics directly to our students.
