Change of Major Process

Step 2. During the appointment, work with the Peer Advisor to:

Step 3.

  • Submit the Academic Plan to "Statistics" in OASIS.
    • Note:  The academic plan must have all major requirements for the Statistics program unless you have less than 90 units completed. If you have 90 units or less, a three quarter plan will be sufficient.
  • Submit the Change of Major petition in OASIS.

Your Change of Major petition will be returned if you do not have the Academic Requirements complete, the Degree Worksheets, or a submitted Academic Plan.

Double/Multiple Major Process

Step 1.  Schedule an appointment with the Statistics Peer Advisors.  The Peer Advisors offer both in-person and virtual appointments.

Step 2. During the appointment, work with the Peer Advisor to:

Step 3. Meet with your current major advisor(s) to add your other major requirements to the Statistics Academic Plan or add the other major requirements to the Statistics Academic Plan on your own.  You are strongly recommended to discuss your intention to add a second major with your current major advisor.

Step 4:

  • Submit the Academic Plan to "Statistics" AND your other major department(s) in OASIS.
  • Submit the Change of Major petition in OASIS.
    • In the "Notes" section of the Change of Major form, you must make a note about what upper division courses (if any) will be used for both majors. If there will be no upper division courses shared between the major programs, please write "No Overlap" in the "Notes" section.   You can find out more about the double major overlap policies in the College of Letters and Science here.

Your Change of Major petition will be returned if you do not have the Academic Requirements complete, the Degree Worksheets, submitted Academic Plan, or a note about the overlap in the Change of Major petition.

Please keep in mind that depending on the major/college in which you are double majoring, there may be additional requirements and policies for that major/college.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is the Department of Statistics making this change?
  • After evaluating student performance in the major from the past five years, the department observed that students who meet these minimum requirements are less likely to need to repeat upper division major coursework and overall perform better in the major. Students who meet these minimum requirements are also less likely to be in not good academic standing and are more likely to graduate in four years.

This change also is aligned with similar major programs on campus including Data Science, Mathematics, and Computer Science.
  • How does this impact me if I plan to change my major prior to Fall 2025?
  • It does not impact you.  These requirements will only go into effect Fall 2025 and beyond. You can find the current requirements to change into the Statistics major on the Change of Major page.  That being said, students who do not meet these minimum requirements should consider carefully if Statistics is the right major program for you.
  • Will these requirements impact me if I am adding Statistics as my second major?
  • Yes, beginning Fall 2025 if you plan to add Statistics as a second (or third) major you will be required to meet these requirements.
  • How can I check if I have completed all of these requirements?
  • A great way to check if you have fulfilled these requirements would be to use the "Major Change Requirement Check" Degree Worksheet in OASIS.  We strongly recommend meeting with a Peer Advisor to help you plan when to take the required courses.

To access the Degree Worksheet, log into OASIS and go to the "Degree Worksheets" tab.  You will be able to search for "Statistics" in the "Find a worksheet:" area. Once "Statistics" is selected, there will be several worksheet options. Select "Major Change Requirement Check."  If you have any questions about whether you are eligible to enter the major, please email stat-advising@ucdavis.edu.
